Creative Quote of the day

“If patterns exist in our seemingly patternless lives — and they do — then the law of harmony insists that the most harmonious of all patterns, circles within circles, will most often assert itself.”

Sulphur Point, Rotorua Pilgrim Geese

The Pilgrim goose is known for being calm, sweet-tempered, personable,rugged, quiet, docile, good foragers and excellent natural parents.
Most strains of Pilgrims, hand reared, are exceptionally tame.
They are also very self-sufficient if left to their own devices - good grazers with a strong flocking instinct.

Pilgrim geese were originally domesticated for various purposes and are useful for Watchdogs - they will alert you to visitors and intruders.
Geese are unlikely to attack your visitors, but they will call out to attract your attention. They  are fascinating, hardy and long-lived creatures that can give you  hours of entertainment and pleasure.

Pilgrim Geese

In certain parts of the world we are endangered, but not here because there are so many lovely places to live and eat where food is plentiful.

We have rituals
In the morning we go for a swim. We then walk to the golf course for a grass and dandelion breakfast.
Then we go back to the shore and spend hours cleaning and preening

We like sitting on rocks, being peaceful and looking at all the chaos that is going around about us with the restless seagulls.

We drink a crazy amount of water and it's a good thing there is so much of it in and around Rotorua

We are generally pretty friendly and curious, especially if you come bearing bread.
We are not supposed to be fed but some visitors can't resist.
Bread is ok, it's not our favourite, we prefer grass  from the golfcourse and weed from the lake

You can guarantee we will come up close if you just sit down for a while peacefully (with some bread) when we are in the preening mood.
If you stay long enough with us you will catch some of our spirituality.
You will leave fluffy and happy after your goose meditation and your heart will feel lighter and happier

St Mary's Catholic School Rotorua, Haiku, Photography and Art with Room 3, Mrs Nieuwboer to celebrate national Poetry Day on Friday 26th August.

I went to St Mary's Catholic School to run a haiku workshop with Room 3 with Mrs Nieuwboer

I did a demonstration and lesson on what a haiku was and read out some of my haiku with photographs I had taken of nature.
.

Mrs Nieuwboer  had also made some preparation  for the lesson by putting examples of children's  and adults haiku on  the white board.  She also cut out the paper to the right size and organised all the art materials.

The children wrote a bank of words in relation to each photograph that  I handed out to them. Each one was different.

They then illustrated their 3 lined poem and made a background to look like a stained glass window

Mr MacMillan Principal came and took some shots of the children and posted them online with his new phone.

This is a  photo of their work in front of the "Lest We Forget" poppy mosaic project I ran  with the school two years ago for Anzac Day .

Just two of the lovely pupils in Room Three

I ran out of time to take individual photos of them all.
Everyone had a great time being creative, reciting their poems, and practising their spelling and hand writing.

This is the fifth time  I have run this workshop and each time it becomes more developed with various teacher's inputs.
It is a creative collaboration to celebrate National Poetry Day.

I write haiku every day and it is my dream to run  workshops in every  primary and intermediate school in Rotorua.
This workshop helps with literacy, handwriting, creativity, introduction to poetry and culture of Japan, confidence.
It's relaxing, meditative and lots of fun.
It's an integrated student centred approach to learning and is very helpful to kinesetic and visual learners.
