Photography Lessons for beginners using Canon DSLR's, Advice I wish people had told me before I started.

Buy the best quality lens you can afford.
I recommend a 24mm to 105mm Canon Series L lens.
It's a good walk around lens with quality glass.
It's not too heavy and obtrusive.
Don't listen to people who say; you don't have to have good lenses to take good photos.

Buy a canon 100 cm macro lens. I have a Sigma 50mm.
It is cheaper than a Canon 100mm.
The disadvantage of it is that if you get up  too close to your subject you caste a shadow onto it.
A canon 100mm lens would allow you to get a close up shot from further away so you are not casting a shadow or even touching your subject.

It's often about the light.
The best light is in the morning at dusk and in the evening around  sunset.
 The golden hours.
The light is too flat in the middle of the day; especially for landscapes; don't bother.

Make a folder early on called best photos and start filing the ones you like away so you can enter competitions or put them on your blog or have an exhibition.
Or just look at them for inspiration.
You will know when you have taken a photo you like.
 Keep it.

It's good to keep your settings on AV.
Lots of professional photographers do this.
It's less complicated than manual; especially at the start.

One thing I did correctly  from the start; was to join the  Rotorua Camera Club.
And to persevere with it,  through thick and thin.
It made me take a lot more photographs and it allowed me to view a lot of award winning photographs.
Some of the critiquing can be a bit harsh and unhelpful at times and some of the award winning photographs can seem a bit on the boring side to an artist.
But I went on a lot of workshops and slowly; so incredibly slowly; I got better.

I think its a good idea to join Viewbug because all of the photographers and organisers are very positive.
People award your photos and give them likes and this can be helpful when you are looking at  things from a popularity aspect.
There are lots of  really good photographers on there and you have a chance to vote for their photos, follow them and give and receive  awards.
Collecting points can be addictive.

 This is my latest thing.

Making natural subjects like seagulls appear quite unnatural, surreal  and a little sinister.

I love creating photographs that no-one else has.
Photographs that sometimes tell a story or ask questions to me are arresting.

I love photography and I love teaching beginners.

School Holiday Creativity Classes for Fine Young Artists. Monday, Tuesday Wednesday Mornings 9.30 to 12.30 December and January 2017 to 2018

Come into my studio and create fun paintings and mixed media creations with textures.

Learn that there are beautiful mini-worlds out there  by being encouraged to  develop your imagination and really see the possibilities.

Let's create stories together and if you have your own I-pad bring it along and we can  take photos of your progress.
Become famous and show the world how creative you are.

Spaces are limited and these are exclusive opportunities.
I take at the most six  people at a time.

It's not like  most other holiday programmes where you are crammed in with lots of other  noisy kids.
It's not a babysitting service.
People will be encouraged to focus, have fun but also to keep the noise down.
We want mindful creativity

And everyone needs to be genuinely interested in being creative and productive.

The cost for each child is $75.00   for three hours, including materials and they will come out with at least one finished art piece that they can hang proudly on the wall or place in the garden.

So come on what are you waiting for?

Ring me for a phone interview to talk about your child's needs and interests artistically.

Activities include mosaics, painting, photography, creative writing,  wax volcanic work, robot making and up cycled sculptures.
  Plus other possibilities.
I just need to know what your child's interests are and I can tailor make an exclusive lesson for them

This is the first time I have run a holiday programme because people have been requesting it.

Your precious child is invited and included  into an exclusive,   quiet environment.

Art making is treated as being  vitally important for intellectual emotional and spiritual development.

They are surrounded by lots of art and mosaics for inspiration.

My  studio is set in a healthy organic flower garden and there is a walk around the whole section where children can make wishes on peace sculptures.

Phone 07 3463435

They will be using artist quality materials with lots of attention and encouragement.
Every persons work will be different.
I look forward to your favourable response.

I really like images that are hard to define, images that are abstracted and multi layered.

During my lessons I tailor make them to your requirements in that I am not expecting you to be a clone of me.

You are given freedom to express yourself.

I give insights and tools that I think will help you and we will see what you come up with.

Students photographs start to take off and have a life of their own, because we are working intuitively and organically.
